State BJP likely to remove over a dozen district presidents

MP, August 12, 2026, Kolkata : The state BJP is likely to remove more than a dozen district presidents over alleged failure to act against corruption, with the move expected to be followed by an organisational reshuffle at the grassroots level, party sources said.

The state leadership has received complaints against several district presidents for allegedly maintaining close links with local functionaries accused of extortion and other irregularities.

Factionalism and infighting in several districts have also emerged as a concern.

The proposed changes are being seen as part of the BJP’s attempt to “cleanse” the organisation following its expansion across Bengal.

More than 250 party workers and functionaries have already been suspended for alleged anti-party and unethical activities.

Complaints have come from areas including North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Asansol.

Leaders and workers who recently joined the BJP from the TMC are also under scrutiny.

The leadership is concerned that some former Trinamool workers have acquired considerable influence in panchayats and municipalities, triggering clashes between rival groups, particularly in Howrah and Hooghly.

The incidents have reportedly also caused concern among sections of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

In Coochbehar’s Natabari, BJP workers protested against the mandal president after a purported video showing him counting money went viral.

The protesters demanded his removal, alleging he had been collecting cut money for several days.

In Bagnan, one BJP faction protested against another, alleging its leaders were involved in illegal construction of a building.

Factional tensions were also reported from East Burdwan’s Monteshwar, where a section of BJP workers demanded the resignation of local MLA Saikat Panja.

His car was also allegedly attacked in his own Assembly constituency.
