Rescue Teams Continue Search for 6 Missing Climbers After Pakistan Avalanche: Recovered 8 Bodies Including veteran British-Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja

PTI, Aug 4, 2026, Islamabad: Rescue teams on Tuesday searched on foot to locate the remains of the last two members of a 10-member expedition group buried in a deadly avalanche last week, as adverse weather conditions prevented helicopters from joining the operation, officials said.

The climbing team—comprising six Nepalese, one Pakistani, one Omani, one American and one Chinese—went missing on Thursday after the avalanche struck the group at an altitude of around 7,000 metres while it was attempting to scale Broad Peak in the Karakoram range.

According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), rescuers have so far recovered the bodies of eight climbers. Search efforts continue for Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi and Nawang Thindu Sherpa, it added.

The bodies recovered have been identified as veteran British-Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja; Pur Bahadur Gurung, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa and Gyalu Sherpa of Nepal; Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy of Oman; Mallory Geis of the US; and China's Wang Zhong.
