Nyaybichar Mancha Holds Symbolic Hunger Strike, Submits Complaint to ED Alleging Financial Irregularities

Baby Charaborty, KalimNews, July 4, 2026, Kolkata: : Members of Nyaybichar Mancha (Justice Forum) concluded a four-day symbolic hunger strike in Kolkata, calling for justice in the murder of Dr. Tilottama (victim doctor) in R.G. Kar Hospital and urging authorities to investigate alleged financial irregularities linked to crowdfunding conducted during the protests that followed the incident.

The symbolic fast was observed daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at several prominent locations across the city, including Esplanade's Y-Channel, Rashbehari Avenue, and the Esplanade Metro Gate. Participants demanded stringent punishment for those responsible for Dr. Tilottama's murder and sought an inquiry into allegations that funds raised in the wake of the tragedy had been misused.

As part of its campaign, Nyaybichar Mancha submitted a written complaint to the Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at the CGO Complex, requesting an investigation into alleged financial misconduct involving the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front. The forum stated that it had earlier submitted written representations on the matter to the Chief Minister and the Governor.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Chandrachur Goswami, President and Convener of Nyaybichar Mancha, described the killing of Dr. Abhaya at R.G. Kar Hospital as a tragedy that had deeply shocked society. He alleged that the subsequent misuse of public donations collected through crowdfunding, if proven, would represent a serious betrayal of the trust placed in those leading the movement.

According to Dr. Goswami, members of the forum had repeatedly urged representatives of the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front, both in person and through email, to maintain transparency in the collection and utilisation of public donations. He claimed that these requests did not receive a satisfactory response and alleged that the organisation failed to provide adequate financial accountability.

He further alleged that, during the period of agitation, some junior doctors neglected their hospital responsibilities while continuing their private medical practice, resulting in difficulties for patients who depended on government healthcare services. These allegations have not been independently verified.

Dr. Goswami also claimed that substantial sums of money were raised through crowdfunding in the name of the movement and alleged that a significant portion of those funds had been misappropriated. He further alleged that fabricated bills had been prepared in the name of artist Asit Sai, who, according to the forum, had created the statue of Abhaya installed at R.G. Kar Hospital without accepting any payment. These allegations remain unproven, and no findings from any investigative agency have been reported.

Expressing concern over the matter, Dr. Goswami stated that individuals who allegedly misuse public trust should be thoroughly investigated. He also alleged that, after Nyaybichar Mancha raised these issues during a press conference at the Kolkata Press Club, members of the former platform dissolved their organisation and subsequently began operating under a new banner, reportedly named "Voice of Abhaya, Voice for Justice." According to him, the change amounted only to a rebranding and did not address the allegations raised by the forum.

The forum expressed confidence that the Enforcement Directorate would examine the complaint in accordance with the law. Dr. Goswami added that, if necessary, Nyaybichar Mancha would also submit a representation to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking further action.

Among those who participated in the four-day symbolic hunger strike were Convener Dr. Chandrachur Goswami and several state-level leaders, including Anamika Mondal, Antara Mitra, Anjan Prasad Majumdar, Dr. Aniruddha Pal, Parimal Majumdar, Srimanta Palit, Pritam Bala, and Sandip Sarkar.
