Mamata Banerjee Responds to Police Action During CJP Protest

MP, July 21, 2026, Kolkata : TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, on Monday, condemned the police action on the CJP protest in Delhi, saying: "I strongly condemn the police brutality unleashed on our youth and students."

She questioned: "What kind of government fears its own students?" and what kind of democracy responds to questions with batons and tear gas instead of dialogue.

Mamata said: "The Nation belongs to its students, its farmers, its women, its workers and to every citizen," asserting that "dissent is not a crime" and "brutality is not governance".

She expressed solidarity with the protesters, saying: "Accountability is non-negotiable."

The protest by the CJP at Jantar Mantar had earlier received support from Mamata, who spoke to Sonam Wangchuk, then on a hunger strike, to enquire about his health.

TMC leaders Mahua Moitra, Dola Sen and Sagarika Ghose had also met Wangchuk and other protesters in Delhi.

On Monday, protesters faced police action during a march towards Parliament, with allegations of lathicharge and the use of tear gas.

The main protest site at Jantar Mantar was later cleared.

Mahua alleged that internet services were shut down and "brutality" began at the protest site.

"Any government that attacks non-violent student protesters with brute force is on its last legs," she said.

Later, Union Minister JP Nadda met representatives of the CJP, with the protesters' demands being discussed.

Saluting the protesters for their "courage, resilience and indomitable spirit", Banerjee added that they had shown the nation "what fearlessness is".
