Supreme Courts of India and Russia Sign MoU on Judicial Cooperation
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Moscow on Tuesday.
Accompanied by a delegation from the apex court, CJI Kant met the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.
"The meeting was convened in the Marble Hall of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation in Moscow, where the deliberations commenced with a particular emphasis on the historical and contemporary amicable relations that both nations share," a release said.
According to the release, discussions highlighted the necessity for mutual cooperation to address emerging challenges, the digital transformation undertaken by the judiciaries of both countries, particularly in the integration of technology and artificial intelligence into court procedures to enhance the justice delivery system and facilitate improved access to justice, and included a brief discourse on the significance of high-quality judicial education.
"The discussion subsequently shifted towards exploring practical measures to enhance judicial cooperation between the judiciaries of the two States, grounded in the principles of sovereign equality and other recognised international instruments to which both States are parties.
"Following extensive deliberations between the two Chief Justices and their respective delegations, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, affirming the commitment of both sides to enhance cooperation through exchange visits, short- and long-term training programmes, and the organisation of joint seminars and conferences," the release said.
It was agreed that a joint working group would be constituted to develop strategies and mechanisms for sustained technological collaboration and deeper institutional engagement between the two judiciaries, the release added.
