Security Cover of Five TMC MLAs from Birbhum Upgraded

MP, June 8, 2026, Kolkata: Amid the ongoing trend of scaling down security cover for MLAs, MPs and other VIPs, the state government has upgraded the security arrangements for five TMC MLAs from Birbhum.

Political analysts suggest that the enhanced security is linked to the escalating leadership crisis within the state Assembly.

The five legislators belong to a faction of 58 TMC MLAs who openly rebelled against party supremo Mamata Banerjee and backed Ritabrata Banerjee’s elevation as Leader of the Opposition, defying the party high command’s directives.

Although the security cover of the five Birbhum MLAs — Chandranath Sinha, Kajal Sheikh, Mosaraf Hossain, Rajendra Prasad Singh and Bidhanchandra Majhi — was downgraded a few weeks ago, two additional armed security personnel have now been assigned to each of them.

It may be mentioned that the internal rift within the TMC has further intensified following a criminal investigation into an alleged signature-forgery controversy.

Allegations surfaced that the signatures of several TMC MLAs had been forged on a document seeking to nominate Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay for the post instead.

Following a complaint by Banerjee, 58 legislators submitted a verified letter to Speaker Rathindra Bose, who subsequently validated Ritabrata Banerjee’s appointment.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently probing the alleged forgery.
