Rebel TMC MPs to Meet Speaker on Monday to Seek Separate Bloc Status; Suvendu May Meet Them on Sunday
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is reportedly set to meet the rebel MPs in Delhi on Sunday, a day before the group’s scheduled meeting with the Speaker.
One of the rebel MPs, Jagadish Chandra Basunia, confirmed that the letter currently carries signatures of 19 Lok Sabha MPs and indicated that the number may rise further.
“The number could be higher; 19 people have signed, and more might follow. The issue lies in the way the TMC operates- Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee, and other party leaders or public representatives don’t listen to anyone,” Basunia said.
Other MPs, namely Abu Taher Khan and Khalilur Rahman, also echoed the same.
The document, reportedly dated May 18 and addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeks recognition for a separate parliamentary bloc.
Among those whose names appear as signatories are actor-turned-politician Deepak Adhikari (Dev), Partha Bhowmick, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Mala Roy, Satabdi Roy, Saayoni Ghosh, Yusuf Pathan, Rachna Banerjee, June Malia and several others.
The appearance of the document has drawn attention because the reported strength of 19 MPs crosses the two-thirds threshold of TMC’s Lok Sabha tally, a number that could become politically significant in the context of parliamentary recognition and anti-defection provisions.
The surfaced letter has triggered intense political discussion as questions continue over the extent of support behind the reported rebel camp.
However, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh questioned whether the signatures appearing on the circulated document match the specimen signatures officially submitted by MPs to Parliament.
In a post on X, he urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s office to compare the signatures with those available in parliamentary records before accepting the document as genuine.
Meanwhile, TMC MP Mahua Moitra sharpened the party’s political attack on the dissident camp and argued that numbers alone cannot determine the legitimacy of a split.
Referring to constitutional provisions, she said the 91st Constitutional Amendment removed the earlier split provision and maintained that under existing rules, two-thirds of the original political party must merge with another party for recognition.
Escalating her criticism, Mahua challenged the 19 rebel MPs to resign and seek a fresh public mandate on BJP tickets if they believe they enjoy sufficient support.
She also reiterated her loyalty to Mamata Banerjee, saying she stood with the party leadership in the past, remains with it at present and will continue to do so.
