The operation, which lasted for several hours, has sparked intense political finger-pointing and left locals stunned.
According to sources, acting on specific information shared by the principal of Kanchrapara Harnett English-medium School, Bikash Chandra Pal, the police reached the spot on Wednesday evening.
After reaching the school, the principal alleged that the accountant, identified as Abhik Kumar Nag, and others were involved in alleged embezzlement, misappropriation and cheating.
Pal told the cops that on Wednesday evening, he had asked the accountant to open the vault on suspicion, as the school had been incurring a huge loss for the past several months.
After opening the vault, a huge amount of money was found.
Along with the money, several condoms were reportedly found as well.
When Nag failed to provide any satisfactory answer, the principal informed the cops.
After counting the money till early on Thursday morning, cops found that about Rs 1.77 crore was kept in the vault.
Later, police detained Nag along with another person who was the junior accountant for interrogation.
Police claimed that while interrogating the duo, several ambiguities were spotted, and the duo failed to provide any documents related to the source of the money.
On Thursday evening, they were arrested.
Apart from these two accused, two more persons were named in the FIR.
However, they are still absconding.
