Police Continue Investigation into Swarup Biswas Case
Biswas, the brother of former West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas, served as the president of the Federation of Cine Technicians & Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI).
He was arrested in connection with a case registered at New Alipore Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Since his arrest, investigators have been taking Biswas to multiple locations linked to the probe and questioning him extensively.
Sources said the Technicians’ Studio could provide important leads regarding the Federation’s functioning, administrative decisions and the role of individuals associated with the organisation.
During his tenure as Federation president, Biswas frequently faced criticism from directors, actors and technicians in the Bengali film industry.
He was accused of starting the ‘ban culture’ in Tollywood and even boycotted and blacklisted professionals.
According to Kolkata Police, “A case vide New Alipore PS Case No. 88 dated 04/06/26 under Sections 75(1)(ii), 308(4), 308(5), 109, 351(3) and 61 of the BNS, 2023, read with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act, was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Simran Pal. One of the named accused, Swarup Biswas (51), was arrested from Sahapur Colony, Kolkata, on June 4 after following all legal formalities.”
His arrest followed allegations of sexual harassment and extortion made by a makeup artist.
During searches conducted as part of the investigation, police seized 15 mobile phones from his New Alipore residence and seven files containing documents, mostly correspondence between production houses and the Federation, from Suruchi Sangha.
