One Dead, One Critically Injured in Two Accidents on NH-10 in Kalimpong
The accidents on the crucial hill highway connecting Siliguri with Sikkim left one person dead and another critically injured.
In the first incident, a car plunged nearly 150 metres into a gorge near the 24th Mile area, close to Mongpu Gate, early on Thursday morning, killing the driver on the spot.
According to police, the accident occurred around 6 am when a Baleno car travelling from Siliguri towards Kalimpong lost control and veered off the road.
The deceased was identified as Md Kamaruddin, a resident of Thakurbari in Kalimpong.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have dozed off while negotiating the stretch near the 24th Mile.
The vehicle reportedly plunged about 150 metres below the highway.
A passenger, Gobin Rai, a resident of Dhupguri, sustained minor injuries.
Police stated that Rai had hired the vehicle on June 3 for a trip to Siliguri and was returning to Kalimpong when the mishap occurred.
Further investigations are underway.
In another serious accident on Wednesday evening, a Gangtok-bound motorcyclist suffered critical injuries after his motorcycle collided head-on with a milk container truck near Bhalukhola, close to the Melli Police Outpost.
The accident occurred around 4.45 pm when a Yamaha motorcycle travelling from Siliguri towards Gangtok reportedly collided with a Sikkim milk-carrying truck heading in the opposite direction.
The rider, identified as Prayas Chettri of Tadong, Gangtok, allegedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
The impact resulted in a traumatic amputation of one of his arms.
A female pillion rider escaped without serious injuries.
Residents and police rushed the injured motorcyclist to Kalimpong District Hospital, from where he was referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
