Kalimpong Medical College Project Moves Forward as 20 Acres of Land Identified for Construction
KalimNews | May 5, 2026 | Kalimpong : A long-cherished dream of the people of Kalimpong and the Darjeeling hills has moved significantly closer to reality with the identification of land for the proposed Medical College in Kalimpong. A 20-acre parcel of land located within the premises of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) at the Seed Farm area of Dungra Khasmahal has been selected for the project, marking a major milestone in the establishment of the region's much-awaited medical institution.
The identified land currently belongs to UBKV and houses the Kalimpong Krishi Vigyan Kendra, the Regional Research Station (Hill Zone), and various agricultural experimental fields measuring about 80.54 acre. To facilitate the project, the process of transferring the land from UBKV to the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, has already been initiated through an inter-departmental proposal.
Sharing the development, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista said the issue was discussed during a high-level meeting held in Kolkata on May 29, 2026, with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The meeting focused on several important matters concerning the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars regions, including the long-pending demand for a medical college in Kalimpong.
According to Bista, following the discussions, the Chief Minister directed officials to expedite the identification of suitable land and the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed institution. The subsequent identification of the 20-acre site at Dungra represents a significant step towards the realization of the project.
A formal proposal seeking the transfer of the land in favour of the Department of Health and Family Welfare has already been submitted. Once the required approvals are obtained from the competent authorities, the site will be utilized for the construction of the new medical college.
Bista described the development as a major achievement for the region, stating that the identification of land and the commencement of the transfer process have brought one of the most important developmental projects for Kalimpong and Darjeeling closer to completion. He emphasized that the establishment of a medical college in the hills will greatly strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services for residents who currently depend on facilities located far from the region.
The proposed institution is expected to not only enhance healthcare delivery but also create opportunities for medical education, employment, and allied services, contributing significantly to the overall development of the hills.
Expressing his appreciation, Bista thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for their support and commitment to the development of the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars. He said the progress made on the medical college project reflects a broader commitment to addressing the long-standing developmental aspirations of the region and ensuring that its residents receive the infrastructure and services they deserve.
With the land now identified and the transfer process underway, the proposed Kalimpong Medical College appears poised to become a reality, offering renewed hope for improved healthcare and educational opportunities across the hill region.
