Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Murdering Neighbour in Siliguri

Amitava Banerjee, MP, June 26, 2026, Siliguri: A Siliguri court on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his neighbour while under the influence of alcohol.

The incident took place in September 2019 in the South Palash area of Champasari in Siliguri.

According to court records, Shiv Oraon had organised a Viswakarma Puja at his grill factory on September 9.

A community feast for factory workers and local residents was held on September 20 following the celebrations.

Most of the guests returned home after the programme, but Manglu Oraon stayed back at Shiv Oraon’s residence as he was a relative of the family.

Late that night, the accused, Anand Oraon, allegedly arrived at the house in an intoxicated condition carrying a stick.

Prosecution witnesses stated that Anand attacked Manglu from behind, striking him on the head.

Kumari Oraon, wife of Shiv Oraon, reportedly witnessed the assault and raised an alarm.

The accused then allegedly became more aggressive and repeatedly assaulted the victim with an iron rod.

Local residents gathered at the spot after hearing the commotion in the early hours of the morning.

A police patrol vehicle passing through the area arrested the accused from the scene itself.

Manglu Oraon was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family, police initiated an investigation and filed charges against Anand Oraon.

During the trial, the court examined 22 witnesses before pronouncing the accused guilty.
