Health Minister Outlines Healthcare Overhaul Plan and RG Kar Case Review

MP, June 11, 2026, Kolkata: Newly appointed Health Minister Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee on Wednesday outlined his priorities for the state’s health sector, stating that his immediate focus would be to identify gaps in healthcare delivery and address them to ensure better services for the public.

Taking a strong stand on the RG Kar rape and murder case, he said those involved in the incident would face scrutiny.

He asserted that the role of doctors who conducted the postmortem would be investigated and the procedures followed by them examined.

He said no one found responsible would be spared.

The minister also promised a comprehensive overhaul of Bengal’s healthcare infrastructure.

He noted that several areas, including medical education, health services, dental care, pharmacy, student welfare, private medical institutions and the Health Recruitment Board, required urgent attention.

Mukherjee further advocated the inclusion of public health education in school curricula, saying students should learn basic life-saving skills from an early age.

Stressing the importance of public awareness, he urged citizens to take responsibility in preventing vector-borne diseases by maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.

Earlier, after offering prayers at the Ram Temple in New Town, he said improving Bengal’s healthcare system would require dedication, public support and divine blessings.
