Bengal Plans to Set Up GST Appellate Tribunal in Siliguri: Finance Minister
Earlier in the day, a pre-Budget consultation meeting was held ahead of the presentation of the state Budget on June 20.
The meeting was organised to gather suggestions and demands related to industrial, commercial and economic development in North Bengal.
The meeting was attended by Nishith Pramanik, Minister for North Bengal Development Department; Anandamay Barman, Minister of State for Finance; industrialists; business associations; and representatives from various districts of North Bengal.
Discussions focused on the overall economic development of North Bengal, with particular emphasis on GST-related issues, the condition of the tea industry, marketing and export of Malda mangoes, promotion of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), tourism development, and challenges faced by the business community.
Speaking on the demand for a GST Appellate Tribunal in Siliguri, Dasgupta said that many business persons face difficulties regarding GST-related matters and appeals.
“I consider this a justified demand. Therefore, all necessary steps will be taken to establish a GST Appellate Tribunal in Siliguri in the coming days,” he said.
The minister also noted that some GST-related demands cannot be resolved by the state and would be raised with the Central government in New Delhi.
Referring to concerns raised by stakeholders from the tea sector, Dasgupta said several issues related to tea gardens were brought to the government’s attention and would be discussed with the concerned departments before being incorporated into the Budget process.
“The past government used to make the Budget on trade mills, but we will take the opinions of people. The objective of this government is different. The Budget will be framed keeping in mind the welfare and development of all sections of society. Economic growth and business development are essential for the overall progress of the state,” the minister added.
