TN CM Suspends 3 IPS Officers Over Insensitive Conduct Amid Coimbatore Child Rape-Murder : Outrage Erupts in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu Erupts in Anger After Police Officers Seen Laughing During Briefing on Coimbatore Child Rape-Murder Case
KalimNews, May 26, 2026, Kalimpong: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has suspended three senior IPS officers, including Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R.V. Ramya Bharathi, following widespread public outrage over a viral video showing them smiling and laughing moments before a media briefing on the brutal rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl.
The disciplinary action comes amid intense national and statewide scrutiny over the handling of the sensitive case, with citizens and social media users sharply criticizing the officials for a lack of empathy, professionalism, and decorum given the gravity of the tragedy.
The victim, a 10-year-old resident of the Pallapalayam area in Sulur near Coimbatore, went missing on the evening of May 21 after stepping out to buy groceries. According to police investigators, she was abducted on a two-wheeler, taken to a nearby coconut grove, sexually assaulted, and murdered. Her body, bearing visible injuries, was discovered the following day near Kannampalayam Lake, triggering immediate protests by local residents and grieving family members.
Law enforcement authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with the heinous crime:K. Karthi (33), a daily wage laborer from Nagapattinam, identified as the prime accused. While attempting to evade arrest in the Merlin Garden area, Karthi reportedly jumped from a building upon spotting police personnel, sustaining fractures to his right hand and leg before being taken into custody. R. Mohan (also identified as Mohan Raj), an alleged associate of the prime accused, is also arrested.
An FIR has been registered against both individuals under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
While the investigation into the murder was underway, public attention quickly shifted toward the conduct of the police leadership. Footage of IG Ramya Bharathi and her colleagues interacting casually and laughing right before addressing journalists sparked intense backlash online. Critics questioned the sensitivity training of senior leadership, demanding strict accountability for their casual demeanor during a moment of profound public grief.
Compounding the political controversy, state Minister S. Keerthana also faced public criticism after clips from related media interactions surfaced online.
Responding to the growing outcry, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay described the underlying crime as "horrific" and took swift administrative action by suspending the three involved IPS officers. The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) issued a stern directive ensuring that heinous crimes will face fast-track investigations, speedy prosecutions, and the maximum legal penalties.
"The government is committed to ensuring swift justice in crimes of this nature and taking firm action against offenders," the CMO statement read.
As local activists and residents continue to protest across Coimbatore demanding enhanced safety measures for women and children, the incident has ignited a broader national conversation regarding the public sensitivity, accountability, and conduct expected from high-ranking officials during crises.
