Humayun moves High Court over alleged post-poll violence in Murshidabad
The writ petition, filed before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, accused the state administration of failing to curb what it described as “systematic and politically motivated” attacks targeting party workers and supporters after the polls.
Murshidabad went to the polls during the first phase of the Assembly elections on April 23, while the second phase was conducted on April 29. Results were declared on May 4.
According to the plea, several incidents involving assault, vandalism, intimidation and use of crude explosives were reported from different parts of the district in the aftermath of the election results.
The petitioners contended that the violence had created an atmosphere of fear among political workers and local residents.
The immediate provocation for approaching the High Court was an alleged attack on one of the petitioners on April 23.
The plea claimed that his vehicle was damaged and party workers accompanying him were assaulted during the incident.
The petition further alleged that despite repeated attempts, police at Nowda police station refused to register a formal complaint.
The alleged inaction of law enforcement authorities, the petition said, reflected a complete administrative failure in maintaining public order.
Claiming violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution, the petitioners sought court-monitored steps to restore normalcy, protection for affected workers and an independent probe into the incidents.
The matter awaits hearing.
