Cops flag fake advisory circulating on social media

MP, May 8, 2026, Kolkata: At a time when police are focusing on preventing post-poll violence and responding promptly to any incident of unrest, the circulation of false information on social media platforms has emerged as a major concern for Kolkata Police.

Over the past few days, following the announcement of the election results, several posts carrying misleading claims regarding the law and order situation have surfaced online.

On Wednesday, a social media post claiming that an advisory had been issued by the Kolkata Police authorities for residents regarding the law and order situation in Ripon Street, Janbazar and adjoining areas started circulating online.

Soon after the post came to the notice of the police, Kolkata Police issued a clarification through its official social media handles, stating that the advisory was fake.

In its post, Kolkata Police stated: “This ‘advisory’ is fake and misleading. The law and order situation within the Kolkata Police jurisdiction remains completely normal and is under constant and vigilant monitoring. Strict legal action is being initiated against those responsible for circulating such false information in the name of the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. Citizens are advised to rely only on official sources for verified updates.”

On Thursday, another advisory, similar to the earlier one, surfaced online claiming that Section 144 of the CrPC had been imposed in parts of the city, including Khidirpur, Topsia and Ripon Street.

Once again, Kolkata Police informed the public through its official social media handles that the advisory was fake and misleading.
