Bengal on edge as post-poll violence spreads across districts

MP, May 8, 2026, Kolkata: West Bengal’s post-election atmosphere turned increasingly volatile on Thursday as reports of firing, bomb attacks and a fresh killing emerged from multiple districts, deepening concerns over law and order in the immediate aftermath of the Assembly results.

The most serious flashpoint was reported from Basirhat in North 24-Parganas, where a BJP worker was allegedly shot at by unidentified assailants.

Party leaders claimed the attack was politically motivated and linked it to the tense post-result climate.

Within hours, another violent incident surfaced from Panihati, on Kolkata’s northern fringe, where bike-borne attackers allegedly hurled crude bombs at BJP supporters late at night.

At least five people were reported injured in the explosion, with several houses in the locality also sustaining damage.

Police reached the area after residents reported repeated blasts.

Fresh allegations of political violence also came from Shibpur in Howrah district, where BJP workers accused miscreants of carrying out both bombing and firing.

Two persons reportedly sustained injuries during the attack.

Security forces later conducted searches in the area, and several individuals were taken in for questioning as investigators attempted to establish the sequence of events.

In Kandi of Murshidabad district, a crude bomb was allegedly hurled at the residence of local Trinamool youth leader Usman Gani late Wednesday night.

Though no casualties were reported, the incident added another layer of anxiety to the rapidly escalating situation.

Police have begun an investigation after a formal complaint.

Amid these politically charged incidents, a separate death in Malda’s English Bazar initially triggered political speculation after the victim, 28-year-old BJP supporter Kishan Halder, was found dead near his residence.

However, police have arrested two persons in connection with the murder and, according to both investigators and local BJP leaders, the incident appears to stem from a personal dispute rather than political rivalry.

With incidents now being reported from North 24-Parganas, Howrah, Murshidabad and Malda within less than twenty-four hours, West Bengal’s post-poll landscape appears increasingly tense, with rival parties trading allegations as security agencies struggle to contain the spread of violence.
