CM Suvendu to hold first admin meetings at Nabanna today
Ahead of the visit, security arrangements at Nabanna have been significantly tightened by both Kolkata Police and Howrah City Police. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand and Howrah Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi, along with several senior officers, inspected the premises on Sunday and reviewed the existing security arrangements. Special attention was given to the Chief Minister’s security protocol and the hall where Adhikari is scheduled to hold meetings.
According to sources, apart from the existing Z-category security consisting of central forces accorded to Adhikari by the Union Home Ministry during his tenure as the Leader of Opposition, there will be additional security by state police too. The state police has assumed the responsibility of his security right after he took the oath as Chief Minister on Saturday.
Given the manner in which his personal assistant was shot dead on the night of May 6, the state administration is unwilling to take any risks regarding the Chief Minister’s security. After meeting top bureaucrats, Adhikari is also scheduled to chair two separate meetings, one with district magistrates and another with senior police officials, including the Director General of Police, the Kolkata Police Commissioner and district police superintendents.
Meanwhile, Adhikari’s official residence in Kolkata is set to change following his elevation as Chief Minister. Till now, he stayed at a flat in Chinar Park in Rajarhat whenever he visited Kolkata for political or official work. He will now shift to Soujanya in Alipore.
The residential complex on Judges Court Road in Alipore was built during the Trinamool Congress regime mainly for VVIP accommodation and was inaugurated in 2018 by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Adhikari’s ancestral home, “Shantikunj”, is located in Contai in East Midnapore district, where his parents and other family members reside. Though he traditionally stays there during visits to his hometown, preparations are now underway to make Soujanya his official Kolkata residence. Sources said arrangements are being made for his stay, though the exact date of the shift is yet to be finalised.
Late on Saturday night, Adhikari returned to Shantikunj after attending programmes in Kolkata following his swearing-in and was greeted by a large crowd. On Sunday afternoon, when he stepped out wearing a saffron stole over a white kurta-pyjama, supporters erupted in cheers. Police had initially put up barricades outside the residence, but sources said the Adhikari family, including senior BJP leader Sisir Adhikari, conveyed that there was no need to restrict visitors.
Groups of supporters continued to gather outside Shantikunj throughout the day. Local residents watched from terraces and balconies, while many visitors from distant places waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the Chief Minister. One admirer reportedly arrived from Dum Dum carrying a bronze leopard statue, while a woman supporter brought a conch shell. In the evening, as Adhikari left for Kolkata, large crowds lined the roads to greet him. In Contai, he briefly stepped out of his vehicle to acknowledge supporters. His convoy later halted at Kolaghat, where he again interacted with waiting crowds before continuing to Kolkata.
