Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Post-Poll Violence, Accuses BJP Over Deaths of TMC Workers
In a strongly worded statement, Banerjee claimed that two party workers — Somnath Bhattacharya from Polba-Dadpur in Saptagram Assembly Constituency and Tapan Sikdar from Chakdah in Nadia — lost their lives after being allegedly assaulted by BJP-backed miscreants.
According to Banerjee, both workers sustained severe injuries in the attacks and later succumbed, taking the death count in post-poll violence higher.
He alleged that the incidents reflect an atmosphere of fear, intimidation and political persecution under the new administration.
Expressing solidarity with the bereaved families, Banerjee said their grief is now accompanied by the question of whether supporting the Trinamool Congress in Bengal has become dangerous under BJP rule.
He accused the state’s law-enforcement machinery of remaining inactive despite repeated incidents of violence and claimed justice continues to elude the victims’ families.
The TMC leader also targeted the country’s top leadership, alleging silence from those in power while ordinary people continue to suffer.
He accused the BJP of promoting a politics driven by violence, vengeance and lawlessness, claiming that democratic voices are being suppressed through fear and intimidation.
With two fresh deaths reported on Tuesday, the death count has risen to eight, with several cases of vandalism also reported.
Police said they have been active with multiple arrests.
Regarding the recent murder of Tapan Sikdar in Nadia, police have arrested one person named Gobinda Das.
