While Narendra Modi did not address these specific concerns during his campaign visit, Amit Shah conveyed that the demands of the Gorkha community would be carefully and fairly considered, emphasizing that any resolution would remain within the framework of a united West Bengal. Reflecting this stance, the BJP’s election manifesto reiterates its commitment to inclusive development and highlights a promise to work towards a permanent political solution for the hill regions that aligns with constitutional provisions and respects local aspirations.
The manifesto outlines a wide range of policy measures, including stricter legal provisions aimed at safeguarding social and territorial integrity, enhanced financial assistance for vulnerable groups such as widows, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, and a commitment to transparent implementation of central welfare schemes. It also proposes the establishment of a Tribal University in Jhargram, improved representation for marginalized communities, and a comprehensive focus on the development of tea tribes, with emphasis on fair wages, healthcare, and social security. Plans for a dedicated Tea Workers’ Development Board aim to ensure better utilization of resources and delivery of welfare benefits, including housing and land ownership rights for tea garden workers.
In addition, the party has presented an extensive vision for revitalizing the tea industry, including replantation initiatives, promotion of sustainable and organic cultivation, subsidies for modernization, and measures to strengthen the global identity of Darjeeling tea through stricter geographical indication enforcement. Efforts to boost exports, improve infrastructure, support small tea growers, and promote tea tourism as part of eco-tourism development are also part of the broader strategy, alongside the establishment of research and innovation centers to address climate challenges and improve productivity.
Addressing a press conference, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista elaborated on the party’s position, stating that upon coming to power in West Bengal, the government would move swiftly to dissolve the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and work towards a permanent political solution within a defined timeframe. He also indicated that steps would be taken to investigate alleged irregularities within the GTA and ensure accountability. Reassuring the public, he emphasized his personal commitment to the cause, stating that his priority lies with the community’s interests and that any deviation from promises would not be acceptable to him.
Bista further noted that previous efforts to resolve the issue had faced challenges, attributing delays to a lack of participation from the state government in tripartite discussions. He reiterated that any proposed solution would adhere to constitutional provisions and would not involve the division of West Bengal, aligning with the party’s broader stance as reflected in its Sankalp Patra.
The manifesto also highlights development-oriented initiatives for North Bengal, including proposals to establish premier institutions such as AIIMS, IIM, and other specialized centers, alongside investments in infrastructure and tourism to create employment opportunities and reduce migration among the youth.
Meanwhile, in Kalimpong, BJP candidate Bharat Kumar Chhetri has been actively engaging with residents through outreach campaigns across areas like Todey Tangta to Teesta Gram Panchayat. Interacting directly with local communities, he has focused on understanding their concerns and aspirations, noting a strong desire for change among many residents. Highlighting his vision, Chhetri has emphasized priorities such as improving education and healthcare, providing housing for economically weaker sections, promoting local industries, and generating employment opportunities to reduce the need for youth to migrate elsewhere.
Drawing from his background as an Olympian and former Indian hockey captain, he acknowledged the challenges of entering politics but expressed confidence in the growing support from the public and party leadership. He underscored that his objective extends beyond electoral success, aiming instead to lay the foundation for sustainable and long-term development in Kalimpong.
As the region approaches the upcoming elections, the political narrative continues to evolve around development promises, governance, and the aspirations of the people. While commitments have been outlined in detail, the focus now shifts to how these assurances will resonate with the electorate and shape the future trajectory of the Darjeeling Hills and surrounding regions.
