Complaint filed with NCW over alleged defamation and online harassment during Assam polls
In her complaint, Chowdhury has named Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of making statements during an election campaign that she claims are false and damaging to her reputation.
A resident of Panbazar in Guwahati, she stated that she is not an active participant in politics and has been drawn into controversy solely because of her daughter's candidature from the Guwahati Central constituency.
According to the complaint, the Chief Minister allegedly made remarks linking her social media activity to hurting the sentiments of "Sanatani people". It is further alleged that statements were made suggesting she had sympathies towards Pakistan, supported "anti-national" individuals, and consumed beef. Chowdhury has strongly denied these claims, describing them as baseless and made with the intent to defame her and politically target her daughter.
Responding to one of the key allegations, Chowdhury clarified details regarding a photograph that was widely circulated on social media. She stated that the image was taken at the International Church of Cannabis during a visit to the United States. According to her, the object visible in the image was not food but an artistic prop used at the venue.
She also submitted a supporting letter from Elevation Ministries, Inc., associated with the location, which confirmed that the item in question was a pillow designed for photography and not an edible substance.
Chowdhury further alleged that following the circulation of these claims, her personal photographs, including images with her minor son, were shared widely on social media platforms without her consent. She said she has been subjected to continuous online abuse, harassment, and attempts at character assassination.
The complaint also mentions the spread of manipulated images and AI-generated content, which she claims were created to damage her public image. She stated that the situation has caused serious mental stress to her and her family, particularly affecting her minor child.
The complaint highlights concerns over privacy violations, dignity, and safety, and raises broader questions about gender-based harassment during election periods.
In her petition, Chowdhury has urged the NCW to take immediate cognisance of the matter. She has requested a proper investigation into the alleged remarks and online harassment. She has also sought directions for the removal of misleading and harmful content from social media platforms, along with legal action against those responsible. Additionally, she has asked for protection for herself and her child.
