Home Minister Sudan Gurung Pushes Reform Agenda, Vows Zero Tolerance for Corruption

KalimNews, Kathmandu, March 27, 2026 :  Newly appointed Home Minister Sudan Gurung has called for efficient public service delivery, strict enforcement of government decisions, and a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, as he formally assumed office at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Singha Durbar.

After taking the oath at the President’s Office, Gurung reached the ministry and took charge, where he was welcomed by senior officials. In his first address, he directed all departments under the Home Ministry to ensure that services are delivered through a single-window system, making them faster, transparent, and easily accessible to citizens.

“Service delivery must be our top priority. The situation where service seekers have to move from one desk to another must end. People should not have to approach individual staff members to get their work done. This is how good governance can be ensured,” he said.

He made it clear that corruption would not be tolerated under any circumstances. “There will be zero tolerance for corruption. Any demand for bribes will not be tolerated,” Gurung stated, warning that strict action would be taken against those involved in bribery or misuse of authority. He also urged citizens to report such incidents to the police.

Gurung emphasized that all Cabinet decisions must be fully implemented and that no official has the authority to ignore government directives. Referring to the recent political transformation led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, he said the changes reflect the aspirations of the younger generation and must be respected in governance.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the findings of the inquiry commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki on the Gen-Z protests. “As per the Prime Minister’s decision regarding the Gen-Z protests, it must be implemented immediately. No one will be exempted from this,” he said, stressing that the Home Ministry bears primary responsibility for executing the report.

Highlighting governance reforms, Gurung stated that VIP privileges would be curtailed to ensure that ordinary citizens do not suffer inconvenience due to high-profile movements. He further instructed security agencies to maintain discipline, impartiality, and dedication to public service.

"The safety of the people is the government's foremost responsibility, and under no circumstances can anyone be above the law." he said, underlining that public safety is the government’s foremost responsibility and that no one is above the law.

He also expressed commitment to working in line with the spirit of the Gen-Z movement, stating that the government would develop systems where citizens’ complaints are directly heard and addressed by authorities. During the program, he requested officials to observe a one-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives during the protests.

Gurung’s rise to the position of Home Minister reflects a remarkable journey shaped by activism, crisis response, and youth-led political change. Before entering public life, he worked as an event manager and DJ, but his career took a decisive turn following the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake, when he was deeply affected by the death of a child in his arms. In the aftermath, he began working with volunteers and institutions such as Bir Hospital in Kathmandu, coordinating relief efforts for affected communities.

He later founded and coordinated the non-governmental organization Hami Nepal, which became actively involved in disaster response and humanitarian work. The organization played a significant role during the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Nepal floods, and even extended support during the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes, earning recognition and awards for its efforts.

Gurung emerged as a key youth leader during the 2025 Gen-Z protests, where he led demonstrations demanding transparency, accountability, and systemic reform. He also participated in high-level negotiations with the President and Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel, which resulted in the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister and the dissolution of parliament, paving the way for early elections.

He continued to play an active role in protests, including leading demonstrations on September 14, 2025, demanding the resignation of the interim leadership. Later, he formally joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) on January 18, 2026, and contested the general election from Gorkha-1, winning a parliamentary seat with 29,896 votes.

Now serving as Home Minister, Gurung is expected to focus on police reform, strengthening internal security, combating corruption, and responding to the demands of Nepal’s younger generation. Known for his action-oriented approach, he reiterated his commitment to delivering results rather than making promises.

“I will focus on action rather than words. I will not just talk, I will act and deliver results,” he affirmed.

His appointment is widely seen as a reflection of Nepal’s changing political landscape, where grassroots activism and youth leadership are increasingly shaping governance and national priorities.
