BRO Begins Snow Clearance Operations in East Sikkim

PTI, March 22, 2026, Gangtok: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Sunday started snow clearance operations to restore traffic in East Sikkim, including Nathula, in the midst of heavy snowfall, officials said.

The road to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula from Gangtok was closed on Saturday due to heavy snowfall in the area, they added.

The snow clearance efforts are aimed at restoring road connectivity to Nathula, Baba Harbhajan, Singh Mandir and Zuluk in East Sikkim and supporting tourism in the region despite difficult weather conditions, officials said.

The Sikkim Tourism Department, along with Project Swastik, is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that routes remain safe, well-managed, and accessible for travellers, they said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday had issued an alert for avalanches in the high-altitude areas of Sikkim over the next 24 hours.

In the meantime, Sikkim was also rocked by a low-intensity earthquake of 4.1 magnitude, a report issued by the National Centre of Seismology (NCS) said.
