Algarah to Get New 10-Bed Hospital Building, Boosting Rural Healthcare

KalimNews, February 11, 2026, Kalimpong:  The construction of a new building for the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Algarah Market under the Lava Block in Kalimpong has emerged as a historic achievement not only for the residents of Algarah Bazaar but also for people living in the surrounding villages and hamlets. For years, rural communities in the region have struggled with the lack of basic healthcare facilities, making this development a significant milestone for public health in the area.

Established in 1992, the Primary Health Centre had been operating from an old and dilapidated structure that was no longer fit for the effective delivery of services. Due to weak physical infrastructure, along with the absence of permanent doctors, nurses and essential healthcare staff, the PHC did not function at its full capacity. As a result, local residents were often compelled to travel long distances to avail even basic medical treatment.

Now, the construction of a modern 10-bed hospital at Algarah Market has been taken up as a West Bengal Government project. The initiative has been made possible through the special efforts of Kalimpong MLA Ruden Sada Lepcha, with sustained and continuous efforts from Area Sabha Member Dawa Tenzing Sherpa and Santook Gram Panchayat Pradhan Sumit Chhetri. Their consistent dedication and coordination have played a crucial role in moving the project forward, and the construction work in the 0.62 decimal land is currently progressing at a rapid pace.

The new Primary Health Centre building is being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹1,42,47,694 (one crore forty-two lakh forty-seven thousand six hundred and ninety-four rupees).

Once the new building is completed, arrangements will be made for the posting of permanent doctors, nurses and healthcare personnel, ensuring the full-fledged operation of the hospital. Facilities for patient admission and in-patient treatment will also be available, enabling rural citizens to access quality healthcare services within their own region.

According to local beneficiaries, MLA Ruden Sada Lepcha has consistently prioritised the development of healthcare, roads and other basic services in the region. His continued efforts, they say, are bringing direct and positive changes to the lives of rural residents. Expressing their satisfaction, members of the community have conveyed their gratitude for the initiative, describing the new hospital as a long-awaited step towards improved healthcare and better living standards in the hills.
