Specially-Abled BLO Admitted to Hospital Due to ‘Extreme Work’

MP, Dec 4, 2025, KOLKATA: A primary school teacher from Howrah, who has 50% disability, was forced to take on the role of a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR). He developed a severe infection in his leg and was admitted to hospital.

Anirban Bandhyapadhyay, who works as the BLO for Part 63 of Domjur Grampanchayat 1 in Howrah, had reportedly submitted his disability certificate to the Election Commission, requesting exemption from this duty. However, there was no response from the commission regarding his request. Family members revealed that Bandhyapadhyay had suffered a toe injury in July and had been advised not to walk long distances.

Despite these health concerns, he was required to walk door-to-door to distribute forms and work late into the night digitising them. His wife, Moumita Bandhyapadhyay, stated, "This sheer pressure took a toll on his health." Anirban was admitted to a private hospital in Kankurgachi on Tuesday night with a severe infection in his leg.

The family has expressed concern over the high treatment expenses. The District Teachers' Association has already extended assistance to the family, and Rajib Bandhyopadhyay, a prominent leader of the ruling party, met Anirban in the hospital and assured him of further support.
