West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Commends Nearly 1 Lakh Students for Clearing JEE Nursing and Paramedical Exams, Stresses Impact on Healthcare System
KalimNews, Kolkata, November 20, 2025 : In a significant milestone for West Bengal’s healthcare sector, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her heartfelt congratulations to nearly 1 lakh students who have recently cleared the state’s Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) for nursing and paramedical courses. These candidates, who are now undergoing counselling for admission into various institutions, represent a new wave of professionals set to join the state’s healthcare workforce.
On Thursday, CM Banerjee took to social media platform X to express her admiration for the successful candidates, as well as their teachers and parents, acknowledging their hard work and dedication. "I extend my congratulations and best wishes to these nearly one lakh successful youths, as well as to their teachers and parents," she wrote.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the successful candidates will now embark on a journey to become part of the Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM), General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), and other vital healthcare professions. She stressed that these roles would play a crucial part in bolstering the state’s healthcare system, especially in state-run hospitals.
“These professionals will contribute significantly to strengthening our healthcare infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas,” she remarked. Banerjee also underscored the evolving link between vocational education, employment opportunities, and the overall improvement of healthcare services. "In this way, vocational education, employment opportunities for lakhs, and the improvement of the state's healthcare system are becoming interconnected," she noted, reflecting her vision for a more robust healthcare ecosystem in the state.
The success of these students is also seen as a reflection of the state's increasing focus on healthcare and vocational training. Under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, the state has invested heavily in improving healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of new medical colleges, healthcare facilities, and the introduction of key initiatives like the Swasthya Sathi card, which provides financial assistance for medical treatment in private healthcare institutions.
Moreover, the state’s healthcare achievements include a significant increase in institutional deliveries, now covering 98% of childbirths across West Bengal. The inclusion of ANM and GNM professionals into the system is expected to further enhance these services, ensuring better care delivery in both urban and rural hospitals.
Mamata Banerjee also took a moment to reflect on the historical context of healthcare development in the state. Under her administration since 2011, she has pushed for free medical treatment at state-run hospitals and the introduction of several landmark schemes aimed at making healthcare accessible to all. Notable among these efforts are the transformation of institutions like SSKM Hospital and Calcutta Medical College into research hubs of national and international repute, particularly in areas such as diabetes research.
She further highlighted the recent expansion of the state’s healthcare network, including the opening of super-specialty hospitals in district areas, and the launch of a new wing at Woodburn Ward, named Ananya, which offers affordable medical consultations and paid indoor facilities for the public.
"Professional training, jobs for one lakh students, and development of the health sector will all add to the growth of our healthcare system and make it more efficient," Banerjee said, expressing her optimism about the future of West Bengal's healthcare sector.
As the counselling process continues, the successful candidates will soon begin their professional journeys, with many expected to contribute to the state's efforts to provide high-quality healthcare services for all its residents. The Chief Minister’s statement reflects a clear vision for integrating education, employment, and healthcare into a mutually reinforcing system that benefits both individuals and the community at large.
