Four Officials Removed Over Wrong Blood Transfusion Death at Gangarampur Hospital
Last week, Mousumi Mardi, a young woman from Kushmandi, was admitted to Kushmandi Rural Hospital with complaints of vomiting and abdominal pain. She was later referred to Gangarampur Super Speciality Hospital for further treatment. At the hospital, Mardi was reportedly transfused with ‘AB positive’ blood, despite her actual blood type being ‘O positive’. After the transfusion, her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to her transfer to Malda Medical College and Hospital. It was there that doctors discovered the blood type mismatch, which contributed to her death.
The revelation of the error sparked outrage and exposed significant lapses in medical procedures at Gangarampur hospital. In response to the incident, the district Health department immediately removed a medical officer and a blood bank technician. Later, a nurse and the hospital superintendent, Babusona Saha, were also removed. Kaushik Chakraborty has been appointed as the new superintendent and assumed charge on Thursday.
A high-level meeting was convened at the Gangarampur Super Speciality Hospital on the same day, attended by Consumer Affairs Minister Biplab Mitra, Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) Sudip Das, Gangarampur SDO Abhishek Shukla, and Patient Welfare Committee Chairman Gautam Das, among other health officials. The meeting focused on reviewing the hospital's management practices and emphasized that any negligence in patient care would not be tolerated.
Speaking to reporters, Sudip Das confirmed the initiation of an investigation, stating, “We have received allegations that a woman was given the wrong blood group. An investigation has been initiated, and samples have been sent to Kolkata for testing. If the charges are proven, strict action will be taken against those responsible.”
Minister Biplab Mitra added, “If medical negligence is established, the government will take legal action and extend support to the bereaved family. We have also formed a committee to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future.”
