Darjeeling MP Raju Bista Begins Construction of Homes for Teesta Flood Victims Using Personal Funds
Six out of ten promised houses for families affected by the 2023 Teesta floods commence with foundation-laying ceremony, reflecting Gorkha solidarity and personal commitment.
KalimNews, Kalimong, September 23, 2025 : In a remarkable demonstration of personal commitment and community solidarity, Darjeeling Lok Sabha MP Raju Bista has initiated the construction of six homes for families affected by the devastating Teesta floods of October 2023. The foundation-laying ceremony for these homes was conducted recently, signaling the start of the much-anticipated reconstruction effort.
Speaking at the event, Bista recalled his pledge to support flood-affected families in the aftermath of the disaster. “I had announced that I would do everything within my capacity to support and assist families affected by the floods. I had personally committed to constructing houses for ten families, and today I am pleased to share that we have begun work on six of those homes,” he said.
What sets this initiative apart is Bista’s insistence on using solely his personal savings and salary to fund the project, without drawing on government funds, donations, or third-party sponsorships. “The main objective of our efforts is to help affected families rebuild their lives with dignity and stability. We are also taking care to ensure that our work complements, rather than overlaps with, the assistance provided by other individuals, organizations, or institutions,” he explained.
Bista emphasized that the initiative is a continuation of the collective spirit of unity and resilience demonstrated by countless people through material aid and voluntary support after the Teesta floods. “It is inspiring to witness so many offering their assistance, whether in kind or through volunteer efforts. Solidarity and Gorkha unity lie at the heart of this initiative. This is not about one individual’s effort, but about strengthening our collective identity and showing that we stand by each other when it matters most,” he added.
The MP expressed gratitude to the local leadership and community for their support in the bhumi-pujan ceremony. He specifically thanked Darjeeling District BJP President Sanjeev Lama, former District President Dr. Kalyan Dewan, and leaders from allied parties for their role in leading the ceremony.
Bista’s initiative serves as a powerful reminder of community resilience and personal accountability, highlighting the spirit of Gorkha solidarity and the importance of rebuilding lives with care, compassion, and dignity.
