Cyclonic Depression in Bay of Bengal: Heavy Rain and Alerts Issued for North Bengal

KalimNews, August 10, 2025 : A fresh cyclonic depression is forming in the Bay of Bengal, raising concerns of heavy rainfall in both South and North Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for fishermen and residents in the region, advising caution as the depression strengthens over the next few days.

Meteorological experts predict the formation of a depression in the northwestern and western-central parts of the Bay of Bengal on August 13. The seasonal trough, which stretches from Bankura and Digha in Bengal, is expected to move eastward, extending towards the northeastern Bay of Bengal. As a result, widespread rainfall is anticipated across the state, with the possibility of thunderstorms.

While South Bengal, including Kolkata, is likely to experience a temporary reduction in rainfall until Wednesday, heavy rains are still expected, especially in parts of South 24 Parganas. Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, is predicted to continue on Sunday, August 13, in areas including West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Nadia, and Murshidabad.

On Monday and Tuesday, the rain intensity will decrease in South Bengal, but the forecast indicates an increase in rainfall on Wednesday. Meanwhile, North Bengal will face the brunt of the monsoon. Areas like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri will witness scattered heavy rainfall on Sunday. There will be a significant risk of thunderstorms in the remaining districts as well.

On Monday, the rainfall intensity will rise to "very heavy" levels in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur. Tuesday will bring extremely heavy rains to Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, with a warning of intense rainfall in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar.

The weather system is likely to cause a disruption in daily life, particularly in the hilly and northeastern regions of Bengal, with possible waterlogging, flash floods, and traffic disruptions. Residents are urged to stay updated with the weather warnings and take necessary precautions.

Weather Update for Kolkata:
In the city of Kolkata, the chances of rainfall on Sunday are low, but humidity levels will be high, causing the temperature to feel warmer. The maximum temperature on Sunday is expected to be around 32.7°C, while the minimum temperature will be 27.9°C. The rainfall intensity is expected to be minimal this week, with conditions gradually improving as the week progresses. However, residents should remain cautious as heavy rain could return on Wednesday.

As the depression continues to develop, the authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation, particularly in North Bengal, where heavy rains and flooding could pose a significant risk.
