Cyber Criminals Steal Rs 3 Lakh from Cop's Account

PTI, August 24, 2025, Mumbai : A police inspector posted at Maharashtra Governor’s official residence, ‘Raj Bhavan,’ in South Mumbai, lost Rs 3 lakh after cybercriminals targeted him through phishing, an official said on Sunday.

Phishing is a type of cyberattack where individuals are tricked into sharing personal and financial details through emails, text messages, phone calls, or malicious links.

The incident occurred between Monday and Saturday, as per the 49-year-old cop's complaint. The inspector, who resides at the Tardeo police colony, stated that he had received a WhatsApp message in a group regarding RTO challans. He clicked on the link and shared his name and mobile number.

Although the policeman deleted the link afterward, someone unauthorizedly accessed his details and misused the information. Three days later, Rs 3 lakh was withdrawn from his bank account, the official reported.

When the inspector received a message about the money withdrawal, he immediately contacted the cyber helpline at 1930. He subsequently filed a complaint at the Tardeo police station, which led to the registration of a case. The official added that an investigation is currently underway.
