West Bengal Records Rise in COVID-19 Cases; NBMCH Ramps Up Preparedness and Infrastructure Expansion

KalimNews, May 29, 2025, Kolkata: West Bengal reported five new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of active infections in the state to 16, according to an official from the state health department. Of the newly confirmed cases, three individuals are recovering at home, while the other two have been admitted to hospital care. The official noted that most of the patients are experiencing mild symptoms.

Amid a nationwide uptick in COVID-19 cases, North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) in Siliguri is taking proactive steps to ensure readiness, even though no COVID-positive patients have been reported in the region so far. Dr. Sanjay Mallick, Superintendent of NBMCH, confirmed that the hospital's Infectious Diseases (ID) Block is fully equipped with 20 beds, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, and comprehensive isolation facilities. Preparations are being carried out in line with current health guidelines, including plans to install a lift to enhance access to the four-storied ID Block.

“No one has been admitted here with a COVID infection yet, but we are fully prepared,” Dr. Mallick stated following a meeting of the Rogi Kalyan Samity (Patient Welfare Association) on Wednesday. He further urged citizens, particularly those with comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, kidney failure, or other chronic conditions, to remain cautious and take preventive measures seriously.

In addition to pandemic preparedness, NBMCH is undergoing significant infrastructure development. A major initiative is underway to establish a dedicated cancer unit, which is being supported by the West Bengal government and a partnering private organization. Chairperson of the Rogi Kalyan Samity, Gautam Deb, confirmed that 35 percent of the unit’s construction is already complete. A special meeting slated for June 15 is expected to accelerate the remaining work. “The Chief Minister has instructed us to prioritize and fast-track the project,” Deb said.

Meanwhile, the hospital’s radiology department is poised for a substantial upgrade with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art telecobalt radiation machine, valued at approximately ₹8 crore. Seventy-five percent of the payment has already been made. This advanced machine will enhance local access to radiation therapy, reducing the burden on patients who otherwise need to travel to distant centers for treatment.

Further enhancements across the hospital campus include the construction of a new operation theater in the gynecology ward and a 150-bed hostel for female staff. Additionally, Aquaguard water purification systems worth ₹22 lakh are being installed in staff hostels to ensure access to safe drinking water. Efforts are also being directed toward improving the hospital’s solid waste management systems to maintain a clean and hygienic healthcare environment.

Through these comprehensive efforts, NBMCH continues to strengthen its medical infrastructure while maintaining full preparedness to respond to the evolving COVID-19 situation.
