World University of Design Honors Renowned Painter Sakti Burman with ‘Critics’ Choice Award’

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, March 27, 2025, Kolkata : The World University of Design (WUD), India’s first university dedicated to creative education, in collaboration with Nayan Naveli Gallery, has conferred the prestigious ‘WUD Critics’ Choice Award’ for 2025 upon renowned painter Sakti Burman. This honor recognizes his exceptional contributions to the world of painting. The award was presented by Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Gupta, Vice Chancellor of WUD, celebrating Burman’s unparalleled talent and lifelong dedication to the arts, reinforcing his legacy as a key figure in contemporary art.

Born in Kolkata in 1935, Sakti Burman studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, and later at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is known for his distinctive marbling technique, blending oils with acrylics to create fresco-like textures, and incorporating pointillism to impart a dreamlike quality to his artwork. His paintings masterfully weave together elements of Hindu and European mythology, personal memories, and surreal landscapes inhabited by figures, animals, and cityscapes. Since his first solo exhibition in Kolkata in 1954, Burman has showcased his work at prestigious galleries in Paris, London, Milan, and Zurich.

The WUD Critics’ Choice Awards for Visual Arts, established by the World University of Design, aim to promote and empower visual artists across diverse genres in India. These awards recognize not only the achievements of established artists but also encourage emerging talent in the field.
