Speculation Grows Over Next BJP State President in West Bengal

With assembly elections scheduled for next year, the selection of the state president is viewed as a crucial decision. The question remains whether Sukanta Majumdar will continue in the role or if the BJP leadership will appoint a new face.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, speaking to journalists after his morning walk at Newtown Ecopark on Thursday, addressed the speculation. He stated, “Party workers are also asking me this question. However, it will be decided by the party's top leadership. It will be done on time and according to the rules.” He further clarified that while discussions are underway, no final decision has been reached.

Ghosh emphasized that BJP's organizational elections take place every three years across all states, following a structured process. He reassured party workers that the leadership will decide the next state president at the appropriate time. Many within the party believe that the BJP may avoid any abrupt changes before the next elections, especially given the recent announcement of new district presidents and organizational leaders.

Meanwhile, Dilip Ghosh’s active involvement in party affairs has led to speculation that he might be considered for the role once again. However, he dismissed such discussions, stating, “I have been in the same form for the last 10 years. Those who do not know me may say this.”

When asked about the timeline for the announcement, Ghosh said, “The state president election will be held after the nomination phase. This nomination has not been done yet, but once it begins, the date for the election will be announced soon.”

Since his appointment as state president after the 2021 assembly elections, Sukanta Majumdar has played a significant role in strengthening the party’s position in the state. However, internal discussions continue over whether he will be retained or replaced ahead of the 2025 elections. Some party insiders believe that the BJP leadership may prefer continuity to avoid internal disruptions before the crucial election year.

As Dilip Ghosh pointed out, “All decisions will be taken from Delhi,” reinforcing that the final decision lies with the BJP’s national leadership. Until then, the anticipation continues over who will lead the party’s state unit into the next electoral battle.
