Road Infrastructure Boost for Industrial Parks in Alipurduar District Following Chief Minister’s Intervention

Don't Miss

Agencies, Alipurduar, February 17, 2025 :  The West Bengal government has sanctioned funds for the construction of approach roads to two key industrial parks in the Alipurduar district, following the intervention of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sources confirm that a sum of ₹15 crore has been allocated to improve road connectivity to the Ethelbari and Jaigaon industrial parks, a long-standing demand of traders and industrialists in the region.

During an administrative meeting in Alipurduar last month, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her dissatisfaction over the inadequate road connectivity to these industrial hubs. She acknowledged that the existing roads were both narrow and short, posing significant challenges for businesses operating in these areas.

The Ethelbari industrial park, spanning 42 acres, houses 59 stalls, while the Jaigaon industrial park, located near the India-Bhutan border, covers 17.68 acres and consists of 12 stalls. The current approach roads to these parks are insufficient, with Ethelbari’s access road measuring 908 meters and Jaigaon’s just 615 meters in length.

Alipurduar District Magistrate R. Vimala confirmed the allocation of funds and assured swift action: “We have received the necessary funds to construct the approach roads for both Ethelbari and Jaigaon industrial parks. We are working towards commencing the project at the earliest.”

The industrial community has welcomed the move, emphasizing the critical role of proper infrastructure in ensuring smooth business operations. M.L. Rajoria, Secretary of the Ethelbari Industries Association, highlighted the challenges faced by businesses due to inadequate road connectivity. “Most of the district’s concrete-based industries are located in Ethelbari. While we have been allotted plots, the absence of a well-developed approach road has hindered the park’s full-scale operations,” he said.

Administrative sources have revealed that encroachments along the existing access roads have further complicated the situation. Officials confirmed that these encroachments would need to be cleared before the commencement of construction work.

The road development project is expected to significantly enhance industrial activity in the region, providing a boost to businesses and improving overall economic prospects. Traders and industrialists are hopeful that the initiative will lead to smoother logistics, better transportation, and increased investments in the district’s industrial sector.
