Children among 15 killed in stampede at New Delhi Railway Station

 According to the police, the stampede-like situation at the railway station was caused by the sudden influx of passengers from delayed trains.
SNS | New Delhi | February 16, 2025 : t least 15 people, including three children, were killed in a stampede that broke out at New Delhi Railway Station following the reported cancellation of two trains bound for Prayagraj. The stampede occurred on platforms 14 and 15 of the station.

According to the police, the stampede-like situation at the railway station was caused by the sudden influx of passengers from delayed trains.
 
“When the Prayagraj Express was standing at platform no. 14, a large number of people were present at the platform. Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani were delayed, and passengers of these trains were also present at platforms 12, 13, and 14. As per the information, 1,500 general tickets were sold, which is why the crowd became uncontrollable,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway, KPS Malhotra, told a news agency.

Following the incident, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Delhi Police and RPF teams were rushed to the railway station and that the situation was under control.

“The situation is under control at New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS). Delhi Police and RPF reached the spot. Injured have been taken to the hospital. Special trains are being run to evacuate the sudden rush,” he wrote on X.

In another post, the minister informed that four special trains were sent to evacuate “this unprecedented sudden rush at NDLS.”

Reacting to the incident, Delhi LG VK Saxena offered his condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement shared on X, the LG said that he has instructed the Delhi Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Police to take control of relief measures.

“There has been an unfortunate and tragic incident of loss of lives and injuries due to disorder and stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this tragedy. I have spoken to the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner and asked them to address and redress the situation.

“The CS has been asked to invoke DDMA measures and deploy relief personnel. All hospitals are in readiness to address related exigencies. I have instructed the CS and CP to be at the site and take control of relief measures. I am constantly monitoring operations,” the LG said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he was “extremely pained” by the loss of lives due to the stampede at the railway station. “In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Railways Ministry has ordered a high-level inquiry to investigate the incident.
