Sikkim CM Asserts Sovereignty, Rejects Darjeeling Merger Claims
Don't Miss
Agencies, Gangtok, January 12, 20225 : Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang delivered a powerful message on Sunday during the Namprikdang Namsoong Festival, emphatically rejecting calls for a merger between Sikkim and Darjeeling. Taking aim at the Gorkha Rashtriya Congress (GRC) for its controversial statements, Tamang denounced their demands as baseless and politically motivated.
“Some parties are always looking for chaos,” Tamang remarked. “They recently threatened agitation if Sikkim does not merge with Darjeeling. Such a merger is not only impractical but also goes against our history and constitutional protections.”
Tamang reminded the public of Sikkim’s unique identity and the constitutional safeguard provided by Article 371(F), which guarantees its special status as India’s 22nd state. “Our history and identity are deeply rooted, and no one can strip away what Article 371(F) ensures for us,” he declared.
The Chief Minister reassured the people that Sikkim remains united and steadfast in its vision of “Sunala Sikkim, Samriddhi Sikkim” (Golden Sikkim, Prosperous Sikkim). “The Government of India has always respected Sikkim’s sovereignty. There is no reason for anyone to fear baseless claims made by opportunistic groups,” he said, directly addressing concerns stirred by the GRC’s statements.
In a sharp rebuke, Tamang also warned against external interference in Sikkim’s affairs. “The rights we enjoy are granted by the Indian Constitution. Sikkim will always be Sikkim—strong, united, and independent in spirit,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister’s bold statements struck a chord with the people, affirming their confidence in Sikkim’s distinct identity and its commitment to peace, progress, and prosperity amidst political noise.
