Nepalese national held with SIM box sent to 5-day police custody
In the joint operation, a Nepalese national was arrested along the India-Nepal border on Friday night with a SIM box. Police sources stated that the accused, identified as Yagyanidhi Pathak alias Ashok Chettri (44), came to India to sell the box. He is a resident of Ilam, Nepal.
According to the sources, on Friday night, Kharibari police stopped a four-wheeler on the Ramdhanjyot flyover in Kharibari while conducting a Naka Check. From there, Pathak was apprehended. Police seized eight SIM cards of various telecom companies, a mobile phone, a fake Indian Aadhaar card, a Nepalese identification card, bank account details, driving license, a router and 12 antennas from Pathak’s vehicle.
Shushanta Neogy, the Public Prosecutor said: “The accused entered India to sell the SIM box. An investigation is on.” A SIM box is a device often linked to cybercrimes, criminal activities and even terrorist operations. It enables untraceable phone calls, making it difficult to track communication or pinpoint the caller’s location.
The arrest comes amidst heightened vigilance in the region following the uncovering of a SIM box racket. Recently, a joint operation by the AIB and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police exposed illegal activities involving SIM boxes at a mobile shop in Fulbari.
Similarly, the Special Task Force (STF) had earlier unearthed a SIM box scam in the Pradhan Nagar area. Abhijit Biswas, the Officer In Charge of Kharibari police stated, “The accused has been taken into remand. We have been trying to find out to whom he was going to sell the box.”
