Cop sent to police lines over sexual assault allegations
Don't Miss
RAJDEEP MONDAL, MP, 12 Jan 2025, Jalpaiguri: A Sub-Inspector (SI) of Rajganj Police Station has been removed from active duty and attached to the police lines after a woman accused him of sexual assault.
The woman lodged a detailed written complaint at Siliguri Women’s Police Station, claiming that SI Subrata Goon called her to his rented residence last Friday and sexually assaulted her.
The case was later transferred to Jalpaiguri Women’s Police Station, where Superintendent of Police Khandbahale Umesh Ganapath confirmed that an investigation had been initiated.
“A case has been filed against the accused officer at Jalpaiguri Women’s Police Station. The officer has been attached to the police lines, and a thorough investigation is underway,” he said.
The woman, who reportedly has an ongoing case at Rajganj Police Station, alleged that SI Goon repeatedly summoned her to the station regarding the matter. On Friday, however, he allegedly called her to his rented house in Rajganj, where he allegedly raped and physically assaulted her.
Later that night, the woman approached Siliguri Women’s Police Station to file a general diary (GD) but claimed she faced further harassment while trying to report the crime. The police conducted the woman’s medical examination on Saturday, and Jalpaiguri Women’s Police Station has initiated an inquiry based on her complaint.
Following the incident, SI Goon has reportedly been absent from Rajganj Police Station. His rented house in Rajganj was found locked, and attempts to reach him have been unsuccessful, with his phone switched off.
Rajganj Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (IC) Anupam Majumdar declined to comment on the matter. The case has drawn sharp political reactions. BJP district president Bapi Goswami said: “When the protector becomes the predator, how can people trust the police in this state?”
Meanwhile, Rajganj Trinamool MLA and district Trinamool chairman Khageshwar Roy stated: “The police are investigating the matter. If the officer is found guilty, he will be punished as per the law.”
