‘State plans to set up more biodiversity parks’

MP, 10 Dec 2024, Kolkata: The state Environment department has plans to set up more biodiversity parks in the state. Many parks are presently under construction while others have already received approval.
“Biodiversity parks are unique landscapes composed of diverse communities that provide environmental, cultural and educational benefits to urban society.
They provide multiple environmental services, including carbon sequestration, replenishment of aquifers and educational and recreational benefits to the urban society. Moreover, these parks with their rich flora and fauna are an ideal tool for promoting conservation education that ultimately has a positive impact on environmental quality and conservation ethics,” said Chandrima Bhattacharya, state Environment minister, on Tuesday.
Bhattacharya in response to a query from TMC Amta legislator Sukanta Pal said, 39 biodiversity parks have already been set up in the state. “Three parks are coming up in Hooghly, one at Arambag has already received approval while another two at Kamarpukur and Khanakul are under consideration of the department.
Two biodiversity parks are in the development state at Bagnan I and Bagnan II blocks in Howrah while another is coming up at Monteshwar in East Burdwan,” she added.
In response to a complaint of environmental concerns by BJP chief whip Sankar Ghosh about multi-storeyed buildings being set up within 250 m from the river, the minister said she will surely look into the matter.
