Dense fog envelops North Bengal, snowfall forecasts in Darj & Sikkim

Don't Miss

Sanchita Aich Bag, MP, 10 Dec 2024, Siliguri: North Bengal, including Siliguri, has been enveloped in heavy fog since Tuesday morning, causing a sharp drop in temperatures and disruption in daily life.
The maximum temperature in Siliguri on Tuesday was recorded at 22°C, while the nighttime temperature dropped to 14°C. Meteorologists predict further decrease in temperature in the coming days.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted snowfall in the upper reaches of Darjeeling and Sikkim. “Snowfall is expected within the next 24 hours in the higher reaches. Light rainfall is also likely in some parts of North Bengal, with temperatures expected to drop by 2-3 degree Celsius,” said Gopinath Raha of IMD, Gangtok.
In areas like Malbazar, Sevoke and Sukna, light rainfall has been predicted, increasing the chill in the air. Residents in Siliguri were seen bundled up in sweaters, caps, mufflers and shawls as they navigated the foggy streets on Tuesday morning.
The dense fog has severely affected air travel at Bagdogra Airport, leading to the cancellation and delay of several flights. According to airport sources, around 10 flights were delayed till the afternoon, while flights between Bagdogra and Delhi were cancelled.
Many arrivals were rescheduled to the afternoon, leaving passengers stranded. Long queues formed at the airport, as travellers waited for updates and alternative arrangements made by the authorities.
“We have been waiting for long hours to catch our flight, but it has been delayed. We have no option but to wait,” said Seema Sethiya, a passenger. While the fog and flight disruptions posed challenges, the prospect of snowfall in Darjeeling and other hill areas brought a sense of excitement for tourists and locals.
Hotels and tour operators in Darjeeling and Sandakphu are gearing up for an influx of visitors eager to witness the snow-covered landscapes. Darjeeling town recorded a maximum temperature of 13.0 degree C and a minimum of 3.4 degree C as per IMD records on Tuesday.
