Birsa Munda, a revered figure in India’s freedom struggle, was instrumental in rallying tribal communities against British oppression. Born in the Ranchi region of present-day Jharkhand, he led the Munda Rebellion and championed the rights of indigenous people, becoming a symbol of resistance and social reform.
In her speech, CM Mamata Banerjee highlighted Birsa Munda's significant role in India’s anti-colonial movement. “Birsa Munda’s life and struggle continue to inspire generations. His unwavering fight for justice and dignity for tribal communities is a legacy we deeply honor,” said Banerjee.
The inaugural event saw participation from tribal leaders, community members, and government officials, including Forest Minister Birbaha Hazda. The week-long festivities will feature cultural programs, exhibitions, and discussions in various districts, emphasizing the contributions of tribal communities to India’s history.
Mamata Banerjee has consistently championed the cause of tribal welfare. It was under her leadership that West Bengal instituted Birsa Munda Diwas to formally recognize the heroics of tribal leaders.
Forest Minister Birbaha Hazda, herself from a tribal background, praised the state’s initiative to spotlight tribal heritage. She remarked, “Birsa Munda’s fight was not just against the British but also against social injustice. These celebrations remind us of the resilience and rich cultural contributions of our tribal communities.”
The event at Rajarhat featured traditional music and dance performances, bringing the vibrant tribal culture to life. Attendees from various tribal groups, including Santhals, Mundas, and Oraons, participated in the festivities.
As the celebrations continue, the government aims to raise awareness about tribal history and foster greater inclusion. This year’s Birsa Munda Diwas stands as a testament to the enduring impact of tribal leaders and their pivotal role in shaping India’s history.
The Chief Minister also reiterated her commitment to tribal welfare, announcing further initiatives for education, healthcare, and employment for tribal communities in West Bengal. “Our government is dedicated to preserving tribal traditions while ensuring their socio-economic development,” she affirmed.
The event underscored the state’s dedication to honoring the legacy of Birsa Munda and reinforcing its support for the tribal population.
