The practice of "throwing Kartik" at the homes of newlyweds or close friends during Kartik Puja is a cherished local custom. However, Bhattacharya's use of the municipality's official letterhead to convey the message drew sharp criticism. The letter even mentioned a fee of ₹2,000 for Kartik Thakur, further fueling the backlash.
The matter gained wider attention when Bhattacharya herself posted about the incident on Facebook. The post quickly went viral, inviting scrutiny from both the public and political opponents.
The opposition, particularly the BJP, seized the opportunity to criticize the Trinamool Congress. BJP Yuva Morcha spokesperson Hari Mishra remarked, “This incident shows the Trinamool's desperation. They are now dragging even religious idols like Kartik Thakur into their politics, and using official resources for personal amusement.”
In response, Baidyabati Municipality Chairman Pintu Mahato issued a stern warning to the councilor. “The municipality’s official pad is meant strictly for administrative work. Using it for personal or recreational purposes is unacceptable. Action has been taken, and the councilor has been warned not to repeat such behavior,” said Mahato.
The incident also drew comments from senior Trinamool leaders. Arindam Guin, the MLA from Chapdani and Trinamool's Hooghly Serampore organizational district president, downplayed the matter, describing it as a harmless joke among friends. However, he admitted, “While the intent was not malicious, the use of an official pad was inappropriate and should not have happened.”
Kartik Puja, celebrated with fervor in various parts of West Bengal, often involves playful customs, including the symbolic “throwing” of Kartik idols. However, this year's festivities in Baidyabati have unexpectedly highlighted the fine line between cultural traditions and political propriety.
As the controversy continues to simmer, the incident underscores the challenges of maintaining boundaries between personal actions and official responsibilities, especially in an era where social media amplifies even the smallest of missteps.
