Police suspect more people are involved in the fake Aadhaar card racket busted near the India-Nepal border

Don't Miss

MP, 11 Nov 2024, Siliguri: Darjeeling Police busted a racket of making fake Indian Aadhaar cards operating along the India-Nepal border in Badrajote area of Batashi, Kharibari. One person has been arrested in the case.
The accused has been identified as Sanay Sarkar, the owner of the cyber cafe where the police conducted a raid on Friday. He was taken into five days of remand for further investigation when he was produced at Siliguri Court on Saturday.
After interrogating him, the police obtained information about more people involved in the case. The police received the names of two cyber fraudsters located in North Dinajpur and Jalpaiguri, for whom they have launched a search, said a police source.
Neha Jain, the Naxalbari Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) said: “They generally make fake Aadhaar cards, especially for Nepalese residents to facilitate their easy access to India. However, the investigation is ongoing.”
On Friday, based on a tip-off regarding the production and distribution of fake Aadhaar cards for Nepalese and Bangladeshi nationals in exchange for significant sums, a team from Kharibari police station, led by the SDPO, raided the cyber cafe.
There, they seized three Aadhaar cards, multiple documents and computer equipment, including hard drives and printers.
Four Nepalese residents were also present at the time of the raid. After interrogation, police released them.
According to police sources, Sarkar was previously arrested on October 2, 2023, for similar offenses, where he allegedly created an Indian identity card for a Bangladeshi national in Phansidewa.
His involvement in both cases suggests a broader network facilitating the illegal production of fake Indian identity cards along the border. During a press briefing, SDPO Jain confirmed that the Nepalese nationals were present at the centre, possibly to collect the fake Aadhaar cards for which they had paid between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000.
These fake IDs are believed to be used primarily to simplify cross-border movement, potentially bypassing immigration and security checks.
