Anit Thapa Warns Party Leaders Over Intimidation and Extortion, Lays Foundation for New Market Complexes in Darjeeling

EOI, DARJEELING, NOVEMBER 25: Taking cognizance of public complaints regarding intimidation and extortion by some party leaders, Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) president Anit Thapa issued a stern warning on Monday. He threatened to expel any party leader involved in such practices, emphasizing that his administration would not tolerate such activities.

Thapa, who also serves as the Chairman of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, made these remarks while laying the foundation stone for three new shopping complexes in Darjeeling town. "It has come to my notice that some of our party leaders are intimidating and extorting money from people over disputed properties. I will not tolerate such actions. If any leader is found guilty, I will throw them out of the party," he declared.

Thapa reminded the crowd and party leaders that the BGPM was founded to combat corruption and usher in administrative reform. "This party was created to eliminate illegal activities. Anyone who is a victim of such practices, whether it involves private or disputed property, can approach me, and I will address the issue," he assured.

Regarding the three upcoming market complexes, Thapa acknowledged the challenges faced in Darjeeling due to a stalemate but expressed hope that these buildings would help resolve various issues, including parking space shortages. "We have not been able to move forward in Darjeeling, but these types of buildings can address different problems. For instance, we can have a parking lot on the lower floor of the complexes. This is just the beginning. There are many municipality buildings that will be converted into complexes in the coming days," he explained.

However, Thapa made it clear that development should not come at the cost of displacing people. "The new complexes will replace very old structures. There are many areas in the town under the Darjeeling Municipality. If the Municipality completes this project satisfactorily and hands it over to the people properly, other places will also cooperate in similar projects for the rebuilding of old buildings. People should be rehabilitated to earn their livelihood," he stated.

Thapa also emphasized the need for public support for such projects. "The civic body needs the help of the people for these projects. For instance, in Mall Road, I had promised to clear the hawkers' space, and I have fulfilled that promise. I did not need to use force. I have also provided an alternative place for them," he noted.

The BGPM president urged his party workers and leaders to refrain from seeking favours or illegally acquiring space in the new complexes. "I have been receiving calls asking for favours. I will not entertain such requests. I will not allow anyone to occupy spaces illegally. We have a history of party leaders owning shops and spaces in the name of their family members," Thapa added.

The three new complexes are expected to be completed within one and a half years, with an estimated cost of Rs 11.63 crore.
