Tensions Rise Amid Durga Puja Festivities as Junior Doctors Continue Hunger Strike

Don't Miss

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 10, 2024, Kolkata – As the state of West Bengal immerses itself in the vibrant celebrations of Mahasaptami, the festive mood contrasts sharply with the ongoing hunger strike by junior doctors at RG Kar Hospital. Since Saturday night, these doctors have been protesting for better working conditions and healthcare infrastructure, drawing significant attention amid the festivities.

Despite the joyous atmosphere surrounding Durga Puja, the strike has prompted political commentary from Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh. In a series of posts on social media platform X, Ghosh raised various concerns about the medical community, specifically targeting senior doctors rather than the junior doctors directly involved in the strike. He highlighted perceived failures within the healthcare system and questioned the actions of those who had resigned en masse.

As of now, seven junior doctors are actively participating in the hunger strike in front of the metro channel at Dharmatala, following a week of fasting that has reportedly taken a toll on their health. Ghosh noted the deteriorating physical condition of the protesting doctors and emphasized the need for accountability within the medical ranks.

In his posts, Ghosh pointedly remarked that some doctors "do not wash tulsi leaves," referring to traditional practices and rituals that he believes should be upheld. He called on those who have resigned to submit their resignations formally to the state government, urging that the government accept these resignations.

The ongoing tension has sparked significant discourse within the state's political landscape, overshadowing the festive celebrations. As Kolkata revels in the spirit of Durga Puja, the plight of the junior doctors remains a pressing issue, highlighting the complexities of healthcare and governance in the region.

As both sides of this dispute continue to express their grievances, the hope is for a resolution that addresses the doctors' concerns while allowing the people of Kolkata to fully embrace the joy of the festival season.
