Kolkata's Iconic Durga Puja Carnival Kicks Off with Grandeur on Red Road, Led by Mamata Banerjee

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 15, 2024, Kolkata:
The much-anticipated Durga Puja Carnival, one of Kolkata’s grandest post-festival spectacles, began on Tuesday evening at Red Road with an air of celebration and cultural pride. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee officially inaugurated the event by waving the green flag, signaling the start of this unique procession. Since its inception in 2016, the Durga Puja Carnival has grown in popularity, and each year it attracts not only local enthusiasts but also national and international attention.

Held under the initiative of the West Bengal government, the carnival showcases the best of Kolkata’s Durga Puja celebrations. Each year, iconic Durga Puja committees from across the city present their stunning idols and artistic performances as part of the vibrant immersion procession. The carnival provides a platform for puja committees to display their creativity and devotion to a broader audience, blending tradition with innovation.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been instrumental in conceptualizing and promoting this cultural event, graced the carnival with her presence at Red Road. Alongside her were notable figures such as Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, MP Saini Ghosh, and a host of prominent celebrities including actresses June Mallya and Rachna Banerjee. The event also witnessed the presence of high-ranking officials, including Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma.
The highlight of this year’s carnival was the series of performances that paid tribute to the Chief Minister’s own contributions to the arts. Dances were performed to songs written by Mamata Banerjee herself, with celebrated singer Sriradha Banerjee lending her voice to the lyrics. These performances underscored the blend of political leadership and cultural heritage that defines the event. In a moment of spontaneity and joy, Mamata Banerjee even joined in the dance, much to the delight of the audience.

In addition to the cultural festivities, the carnival featured traditional Santal dances, a tribute to Bengal’s indigenous heritage. Various puja committees also staged folk performances, reflecting the rich diversity of the state’s cultural traditions. The performances captivated the audience, who lined Red Road to witness this grand spectacle that has now become a hallmark of Kolkata’s Durga Puja season.

While the festive mood dominated the evening, the day was also marked by protests linked to the RG Kar case. A group of agitating junior doctors, who have been raising concerns over the unresolved issues surrounding the case, held what they termed the "Carnival of Treachery" on the same day. Their protest aimed to draw attention to the controversial case and demand justice, creating a backdrop of tension amidst the celebrations.

Despite the protests, the carnival remained the focal point for most Kolkatans and tourists alike. Attendees included foreign dignitaries and artists from various parts of the world, further emphasizing the global recognition of Bengal’s Durga Puja, especially after its UNESCO ‘Cultural Heritage’ designation.

The Durga Puja Carnival has not only become a significant cultural event but also a moment of immense pride for Bengal, showcasing the vibrant spirit, artistic ingenuity, and communal harmony of the state. As the grand procession moved forward along Red Road, the city celebrated its rich traditions, setting the stage for another year of unforgettable festivities.
