Coastal Communities Brace for Cyclone Dana as Precautions Intensify

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 24, 2024, Hooghly: As Cyclone Dana approaches, coastal areas along the Bay of Bengal in West Bengal and Odisha are experiencing unprecedented calm as residents heed warnings and evacuate. The Shunshan Ferry Ghat has ceased operations, with the ticket counter closed and the entrance gate locked. Following directives from the state government, local authorities have ordered the suspension of all ferry services for safety reasons.

Starting at 5 PM yesterday, ferry operations from Uttarpara and Guptipara were halted. Despite the closures, some uninformed passengers attempted to access the ferry services, only to find the gates locked. Rainfall has commenced this morning, driven by strong winds from the cyclone, which have darkened the skies and prompted most residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. The usually bustling roads near the ghat are nearly deserted, and many local jute shops remain shuttered.

While train services continue to operate normally today, Eastern Railway has announced that beginning tomorrow morning, in anticipation of Cyclone Dana’s peak impact, 68 trains in the Howrah division will be canceled. This includes all local trains on the Howrah-Arambagh branch. Authorities are prioritizing passenger safety as the storm looms, urging the public to stay informed and prepared.
