Anubrata Mondal Makes Emotional Return to Village Durga Puja After Two-Year Absence

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 11, 2024, Birbhum : After a two-year absence, Anubrata Mondal, a prominent Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, made a heartfelt return to his ancestral village in
Hatserandi, Birbhum, to participate in Durga Puja festivities. Accompanied by his daughter, Sukanya Mondal, his presence drew a large crowd of villagers eager to see him after his long absence. His return comes after being granted bail and marked a significant moment in the village’s Durga Puja celebrations, which had taken place without him for the past two years.

Anubrata Mondal, who has traditionally played a key role in the village’s Durga Puja at his ancestral home, expressed his happiness at being able to reunite with the villagers. However, out of respect for the recent death of his uncle, Mondal refrained from entering the temple or offering the traditional Anjali. “I feel very good to be back, but I won’t be able to enter the temple or offer Anjali because my uncle has passed away. I paid my respects from outside,” Mondal stated, bowing in deference from a distance.

Despite not entering the temple, Mondal spent considerable time engaging with the villagers, who had gathered in large numbers to greet him. Known for his close ties with the local community, he spoke with many villagers, offering them words of encouragement and listening to their concerns. His presence seemed to uplift the spirits of the community, many of whom had missed his participation in the village’s major annual event.

For two years, the Durga Puja at Hatserandi village had taken place without Mondal’s active participation due to his legal issues and personal circumstances. His return on the day of Mahashtami, one of the most important days of the Durga Puja, was symbolic of a reunion with his roots. Accompanied by his daughter Sukanya, who has stood by him through thick and thin, Mondal’s appearance at the celebrations added an emotional touch to this year’s festivities.

Although he did not join in the rituals, Mondal's return was a source of joy for the villagers, who had long associated him with the festival. As Mondal prepared to leave, the elders of the village made their way to his car, keen to have a few words with him before he departed. His interactions with the community reflected the deep connections he maintains with the people of his hometown.

“I’m spending the Puja very well, and it feels great to be back with my people after such a long time,” Mondal said, his tone filled with warmth. His return to Bolpur after two years has been seen as a momentous occasion for both his supporters and the wider community in Birbhum, who had missed his presence during the previous years' celebrations.

The Durga Puja in Hatserandi has always been a significant event for the village, and Anubrata Mondal’s participation had been a staple of the festivities for many years. This year, although he kept a low profile due to his personal loss, his presence was a reminder of the longstanding traditions and bonds that have held the community together.

As the night of Mahashtami continued, the villagers celebrated Durga Puja with renewed vigor, glad to have their leader back among them, even if from a distance. Anubrata Mondal’s return, despite the personal tragedy he endured, highlighted the deep connections between community and leadership in the heart of rural Bengal.
