Sikkim to go back to party-based panchayat and municipal elections, Chief Minister announces

Don't Miss

PRAKSSH ADHIKARI, EOI, GANGTOK, AUGUST 10, 2024 : Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang, who is also the President of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, announced on Saturday that the upcoming municipal and panchayat elections in Sikkim will be party-based; thus reversing the party-less approach adopted in 2019 by the SKM Government.

Under the former Sikkim Democratic Front government, Sikkim held party-based elections for these local bodies from 1997 till 2017.

However, following the formation of the SKM government in 2019, a Bill was passed in the Sikkim assembly to implement party-less elections. Consequently, the municipality elections in 2020 and the panchayat elections in 2022 were conducted without party affiliations.

On the seventh Jan Unmukti Diwas, Chief Minister Tamang declared the return to party-based elections, signifying a shift back to a more structured, party-affiliated electoral process. Municipality elections in Sikkim will be held in 2025, and panchayat elections in 2027.
